Just a quick reminder that the 35,000 bonus miles offer for the MBNA / AAdvantage Credit Card ends today.

AAdvantage Credit Card

AAdvantage Credit Card

If you want more information I wrote a card review here.

35,000 bonus miles for a free credit card is one of the best UK travel reward credit card offer in recent history.

As with any financial product before applying I strongly recommend you make sure you understand the product thoroughly.

There are two important points I want to highlight.

  1. This is a dual card account. You are provided with both American Express and VISA cards, and all of the spend requirement can be completed with the VISA card

  2. This is an MBNA card. It does not matter what other cards you hold you will earn the sign up bonus

On a personal note, I applied yesterday and was approved instantly with the usual high MBNA limit.

So, what does 35,000 AAdvantage miles get you?

American Airlines Award Chart

American Airlines Partner Awards Chart

You’ll want to avoid British Airways and Iberia because of the additional taxes and charges that we are familiar with through the Avios program, especially since intra-European flights on AAdvantage are ridiculously more expensive than the Reward Saver available through Avios.

HeadforPoints has a good evaluation of American Airlines miles from the British/European perspective.

There are certainly sweet spots within the American Airlines AAdvantage program, such as flights to Russia, Middle East and India, and with the points earned through this credit card you should be able to book at least a one-way award to be combined with an Avios one-way back to the UK.

Since the card has no annual fee the only question is whether you’ll be able to meet the £5,000 spending requirement. As this is a dual credit card with a VISA card element this should not be as difficult as just an American Express card. You can also take advantage of the new VISA prepaid debit card loophole to pay bills that don’t accept VISA credit cards.

The conclusion is quite simple. This is an amazing offer, probably the best UK credit card sign up offer for a free card ever!

Offer ends 31 May 2013! So act now!

Mighty Deals Offers 2,000 Avios for £10

Mighty Deals is a daily deals website run by MoneyExpert (not Money Saving Expert). It is offering a Shell loyalty card preloaded with £20 credit for the price of £10. You can instantly see the value of this deal, half price petrol. However, I am sure you are asking yourself, what has this to do with Avios and travel?

Mighty Deals

Well, the Shell loyalty programme is called Shell Drivers’ Club and redeeming points for petrol is not the only use available. You can exchange Shell points for Avios with every 20 points worth 10 Avios. This can be done through Avios.com or British Airways Executive Club, whichever is more convenient.

So, a £20 credit means a card loaded with 4,000 Shell points and 4,000 Shell points can be exchanged for 2,000 Avios. Therefore with this deal you are effectively purchasing 2,000 Avios for £10 (1 Avios = 0.5 pence). An exceptional deal.

However, we can do even better. For you see Mighty Deals is available through TopCashBack and the cashback 15.15% and as I outlined in this post cashback through TopCashBack can be exchanged for Tesco Clubcard points, which can in turn be exchanged for Avios.

If you go through TopCashBack you will earn £1.26 (15.15% of £10 – VAT), which can be exchanged for 317 Avios.

Therefore the deal becomes 2317 Avios for £10 (1 Avios = 0.43 pence).

This is how the deal will work. You will be sent a Shell loyalty card by 11 June 2013. You then register your card online by 30 June 2013. You then select Avios as your redemption option and exchange the Shell points for Avios through either your Avios.com account or British Airways Executive Club account.

If you already have a Shell Drivers’ Club account then you can merge this new card with your existing account.

This deal is limited to one per transaction. However, this appears to be monitored through the email address. So, if you were so inclined you could purchase multiple cards using different email addresses but you would have to complete them as different transactions.

This deal has been promoted in the MoneySavingExpert weekly email and has a limited stock so I do not expect it even to last until the advertised end date 28 May 2013. So, act quickly if you are interested!

If you have not yet joined TopCashBack then you can click through the link on your right hand side and this blog will earn a small referral credit.

Club Carlson Offers 10,000 Bonus Gold Points per 2 Night Stay

Club Carlson is a portfolio of hotels that uses the following brands:

  • Carlson Rezidor

  • Radisson Blu

  • Radisson

  • Park Plaza

  • Park Inn

  • Country Inn & Suites

Earn Gold Points

Club Carlson points are earned by staying nights at one of the hotels listed above. A basic Red level member of Club Carlson will earn 20 Gold Points per $ spend, 25% bonus for Silver, 50% for Gold, and 75% for Concierge. There are other advantages of holding Status with Club Carlson which I outline in this post.

American residents also have generous credit card offers available.

Club Carlson is a partner of American Express and has a generous conversion rate, 1 American Express Membership Reward converts to 3 Club Carlson Gold Points.

Use Gold Points

A top-level Club Carlson hotel, such as the Radisson Blu Hotel Champs Elysees in Paris, will set you back 50,000 Gold Points a night. Nightly rates from EUR 350 (297 GBP), at time of writing, mean Gold Points can be valued at 0.59 pence. If you are transferring from American Express then you will be getting a decent 1.78 pence of value per Membership Reward point.

At the lowest level you could book the Radisson Blu in Budapest, Hungary for as little as 9,000 Gold Points a night.

You can also book at reduced price room for a reduced amount of Gold Points using the Points + Cash rate.

If you are new to the Club Carlson program then I recommend reading PointChaser’s Redemption Guide and TravelIsfree’s The New Best Use of Club Carlson Points. Two excellent blog posts on the subject.

10,000 Club Carlson Gold Points Per 2 Night Stay

The latest promotion offer from Club Carlson is 10,000 Gold Points per 2-night stay.

If you stay two or more consecutive nights at a Club Carlson property between 13 May and 21 July 2013 you will earn 10,000 Gold Points for each stay.

You must register for this promotion.

Stays or nights paid for using Points + Cash are not eligible for this Promotion.

10,000 Gold Points is generous offer but not as generous as Club Carlson’s promotional campaign last summer. However, Club Carlson is a useful program for British and European hotel-users as there is a broad number of available properties covering opulent and economical and the transfer partnership with American Express makes Gold Points relatively easy to earn. It is worth registering for this program just in case you make stay before 21 July 2013.

How to Book a Cheap Hotel Room

This a travel hack post focused on branded hotels.

To avoid confusion, let me state straight away that the aim of this post is not to suggest that branded hotels are the best option when booking a hotel room. I always search on Kayak, Hotels.com or Trivago to make sure I am getting the best value from my booking. The key advantage of paying in cash is you have the widest possible choice of hotels, locations and dates.

I use branded hotels for two specific reasons;

1) It is easy to acquire status with a hotel brand and this status can provide a substantially better experience at no additional cost

2) Branded hotels have loyalty programs that can be used to earn free stays or significant discounts

Now, remember Hotels.com have their own reward program called Welcome Rewards that provides a free night for every 10th stay. This I consider to be the industry standard and what I aim to beat on any hotel booking that I make at a branded hotel.

TopCashBack offers 8% cashback available for Hotels.com

Hilton

Hilton is the first branded hotel I will examine. Hilton have the following brands in their portfolio.

  • Waldorf Astoria

  • Conrad

  • Hilton

  • DoubleTree

  • Embassy Suites

  • Hilton Garden Inn

  • Hampton

  • HomeWood Suites

  • Home 2 Suites

The Hilton HHonors program has suffered a devaluation recently that has made more difficult to book their aspirational properties. If you chose Hilton as your hotel brand of choice then I would highly recommend reading the implications of the devaluation of their program.

The main travel hack I use for Hilton is the Corporate Benefit Partner Rate as outlined here by Loyalty Lobby.

You use code PR13CB in the promotional code box.

This gives you a prepaid rate that could be a substantial discount to Hilton’s best available rate. You must have definite plans in place if you want to use this rate.

It is important to check if Hilton is running any other promotions at the time of your booking as those promotions may offer a more substantial discount. For example, at the time of writing, Hilton is offering 33% off on stays of 3 or more nights.

Hilton runs points promotions on a regular basis, the current one is the Daily Grand.

TopCashBack offers 5% cashback for Hilton online bookings.

Starwood

starwood preferred guest

The Starwood hotel portfolio includes the following brands:

  • Sheraton

  • Meridien

  • Loft

  • The Luxury Collection

  • Westin

  • Four Points

  • St Regis

  • W Hotels

Starwood has a website for late bookings for their European properties that can offer significant discounts, www.beatthetimer.com.

Starwood runs points promotions on a regular basis, the current one is Double Take.

Priority Club

priorityclubrewardsblack

Priority Club, soon to be renamed IHG Rewards Club, has the following brands in its portfolio:

  • InterContinental

  • Crowne Plaza

  • Hotel Indigo

  • Holiday Inn

  • Staybridge

  • Candlewood

It can be rewarding to book at least one Priority Club stay every 6 to 12 months as promo codes exist that offer significant points bonuses for people who have not stayed at a Priority Club property for a while. These bonus codes are supposed to be targeted but can be used by any account. For example, there are two current promo codes, at time of writing, both offering 1,500 points for a stay within the next 90 days, code 7641 and 2656. There is also another code for 5,000 bonus points for a two night weekend stay, code 7637You can register the codes here. Only use the codes if you have a stay planned. You can book a stay for as little as 5,000 points with the pointsbreak promotion. So, if you get Platinum status and use both codes you will have enough points for free stay.

There is no cashback available for Priority Club at the moment.

Club Carlson

The Club Carlson portfolio of brands includes:

  • Carlson Rezidor

  • Radisson Blu

  • Radisson

  • Park Plaza

  • Country Inn & Suites

If you can gain Club Carlson Gold status you can take advantage of two amazing offers.

  • Stay 2 nights, pay for 1. Dates must be consecutive and include a Friday or Saturday. The rate is

  •  for the first night and the second night is free. Search for properties with promotional code RSGP1P1

  • Stay 4 nights, pay for 2. Dates must be consecutive and include a Friday or Saturday. Rate shown is for the first 2 nights and the second two nights are free.  Search for properties with promotional code RSGP2P2

TopCashBack offers 5% cashback for Radisson Hotels.

How To Get Hotel Status

If you took advantage of the Le Club Platinum offer then you can do a Status Match to the other hotel brands, apart from Starwood. They only require a screenshot of your account to prove your Platinum status then they will offer you the equivalent status with their hotel. They do this because they want your business. Starwood are different in that they offer status matches if you complete a stay challenge, like stay 15 times within 90 days. You can also get hotel status through the American Express Platinum card, or through hotel-branded credit cards, such as Hilton, or Priority Club.

If you did not take advantage  Le Club Platinum offer then do not worry. It is the fourth time within the last 12 months that such an offer has been made so there is a strong chance that a new offer will appear over the next few months. I will, of course, bring you the details on this website as soon as it happens.

VISA PrePaid Changes The Whole Avios Game!

Tesco have a longstanding Clubcard promotion with branded gift cards, earn 150 Clubcard points when you spend £50 in one transaction on selected gift cards. The branded gift cards are for a wide variety of retailers, such as Debenhams, House of Fraser, Pizza Express, Cafe Rouge, iTunes, etc. Most of these places accept American Express so the 150 Clubcard points (360 Avios) are very nice but involved knowing you would spend a certain amount in these places and planning far enough in advance to be able to purchase the gift cards. This is far too much hassle for most people.

A development has occurred recently that changes everything!

Tesco now offer 150 Clubcard points (360 Avios) for VISA branded gift cards. If you look on the above website the disclaimer at the bottom says that VISA cards are excluded but in the VISA FAQ section it clearly states,

“If you’re a Clubcard customer, you’ll earn 150 Clubcard points for every £50 you spend in a single transaction on Branded Gift Cards (including the Visa branded Cards) at the time of purchase.”

I have personally tested this and can confirm the bonus Clubcard points do appear on your receipt.

This opens an amazing array of opportunities. There are many, many places that do not accept American Express but do accept VISA branded cards. Now, before you even think about it, no, you unfortunately are not able to pay credit card bills. The credit card companies do not accept that card BIN of a VISA prepaid gift card for bill payments. However, you are able to pay other bills, such as council tax, HMRC tax bills, SKY, water, gas, electric, mobile phone, etc. You can see why I am calling this a game changer!

There are two types of VISA prepaid gift cards.

First, the standard VISA debit gift card.

visa2

These come in £25 and £50 denominations. Remember, to earn the 150 Clubcard points, you must purchase in multiplies of £50. So, a purchase of £50 (2 x £25 gift cards) will earn 150 points and a purchase of £100 (or 4 x £25 gift cards) will earn 300 points.

The VISA debit gift card can be used as a normal debit card in shops, online, any retailer that accepts VISA cards, but cannot be used to withdraw cash from an ATM, gambling, or what VISA calls ”adult entertainment”.

You cannot load additional funds to the card, purchase more than 5 gift cards at a time, or hold gift cards will total available balance of more than £250 at any one time, though I’m not sure how they will track that.

Gift cards can be used for 24 months from the date they are purchased then they will expire. There is a £3 annual debited from the card in the 11th and 23rd month after the date of purchase but only to cards that still have funds remaining on them at that time. So, always use your gift card in full before the 11th month.

To purchase the £25 card there is a fee of £2.95 with the £50 card carrying a fee of £3.95.

So, here is the maths.

A £50 card would cost £53.95 in total and earn 203 Clubcard points (53 for the purchase plus 150 bonus) and 203 Clubcard points is worth 487 Avios. You could also use the American Express Preferred Reward Gold will double points for supermarket spend in the first year to make the purchase earning a further 100 American Express membership reward points, which in turn, can be converted to 100 Avios, making a grand total of 587 Avios for a £3.95 fee (the £50 you will spend on essential items that would have cost you anyway, such as your council tax bill).

That means 1 Avios equals 0.67 pence. This is tremendous value.

There is an added bonus for those needing to generate spend to meet a spending requirement to earn a sign up bonus. If you were unsure you would be able to meet the £3,000 spending requirement of the British Airways Premium Plus or American Express Platinum then this should make things much easier, especially if you have a large tax bill due.

The second type of VISA prepaid card is even more exciting, the VISA 3V card.

visa1

The VISA 3V card seems to only come in £25 denominations and can be used for internet transactions only. You activate the card online through the VISA 3V website and are provided with a card number, expiry date and CVV (card verification value). You can then purchase you item online like a normal VISA card. The exciting part is there is no fee for a 3V card. To purchase a £25 card will cost £25. The best use is a bill that can be paid in parts, such as council tax, HMRC tax bill, etc. This means you are earning free Avios (or Avios you would not previously have earned) for items you would have paid for anyway. This is a complete game changer. If you are paying £500 a month in bills that can be paid online with a VISA card in part payments then you could use 3V cards and earn 2,000 Clubcard points (or 4,800 Avios) plus the Avios you earn for paying with an American Express card, say 1,000 Avios if you use the American Express Preferred Reward Gold with double supermarket spend in the first year. This mean an extra 5,800 Avios every month, or a staggering 69,600 Avios a year, with no extra spend required. Simply Amazing!

You can merge different 3V card together for a fee of £1.75 if you have a larger purchase planned and are unable to split the payment. You can also withdraw money for a fee of £3.50 by transferring the balance to your bank account. You can hold a maximum £1,000 on a card. So, you could transfer 40 card together at a cost of £70 then transfer the money to your bank account for £3.50. You would earn 3,000 clubcard points (or 7,200 Avios) for a cost of £73.50 meaning 1 Avios equals 1.02 pence, slightly above my valuation of an Avios. Now, you could factor in the extra Avios earned through purchasing on an American Express Preferred Reward Gold pushing the total Avios earned to 9,200 bringing the cost per Avios to a more attractive 0.80 pence. However, this is an ideal world scenario and from all accounts there are not many 3V cards around and you may be prevented from purchasing more than 5 at a time.

If you have any experiences using the VISA prepaid gift cards then please comment below or email me at email@georgethetravelmonkey.com
